Active 'black smoker' chimneys were used as source material to enrich for hyperthermophilic organisms. The chimney shown on the left, known as 'Sully' was venting 362 degree C hydrothermal fluid when it was sampled. The image on the right shows a cross-section of another chimney collected from the site. The black granular holes are the conduits for the hydrothermal fluid.
