Deciphering the Role of Human Adenovrus Infection in Obesity and Breast Cancer Risk

Project Description: This project is to determine if Adenovirus 36 (and other obesogenic adenoviruses) increase the risk of breast cancer. The initial experiments have involved obtaining breast tissue and blood samples from cancer survivors and determining the prevalence and identity of adenoviruses through PCR testing with multiplex primers. I have evaluated and standardized a protocol for the testing and analysis of the multiplex results. Next steps in the project include testing breast milk samples from breast cancer survivors for the obesogenic adenovirus with the same multiplex primers as well as continuing PCR testing on more blood samples from breast cancer survivors.

Determining efficacy of Beta-glucan molecules in wound healing

Project Description: This project is to determine if Beta-glucan is efficient enough to develop a suppository type treatment for wound healing in difficult to access body parts. We are using human fibroblasts, mice macrophages, and human colon carcinoma cells. These cells will be treated with Beta-glucan of different concentrations to see how the they react to it. We will be using microscopy and a test kit to determine the integrity of the cells.
